Turquois: Byzantine Consensus in Wireless Ad hoc Networks (extended version)
نویسندگان
چکیده
The operation of wireless ad hoc networks is intrinsically tied to the ability of nodes to coordinate their actions in a dependable and efficient manner. The failure of some nodes and momentary breakdown of communications, either of accidental or malicious nature, should not result in the failure of the entire system. This paper presents Turquois an intrusion-tolerant consensus protocol specifically designed for resource-constrained wireless ad hoc networks. Turquois allows an efficient utilization of the broadcasting medium, avoids synchrony assumptions, and refrains from public-key cryptography during its normal operation. The protocol is safe despite the arbitrary failure of f < n3 processes from a total of n processes, and unrestricted message omissions. The protocol was prototyped and subject to a comparative performance evaluation against two wellknown intrusion-tolerant consensus protocols. The results show that, as the system scales, Turquois outperforms the other protocols by more than an order of magnitude.

Consensus in Wireless Ad hoc Networks
Solving consensus in wireless ad hoc networks has started to be addressed in several papers. Most of these papers adopt system models similar to those developed for wired networks. These models are focused towards node failures while ignoring link failures, and thus are poorly suited for wireless ad hoc networks. The HO model, which was proposed recently, does not have this drawback. The paper ...
متن کاملAssessment of DSACC and QPART Algorithms in Ad Hoc Networks
The rapid advancement in wireless over wired has augmented the need for improving theQuality of Service (QoS) over such wireless links. However, the wireless ad hoc networkshave too low bandwidth, and establishing a QoS in these networks is a difficult issue. So,support of quality of service in ad hoc networks is the topical issue among the networkscience researchers. In this research we are go...
متن کاملThwarting the Sybil Attack in Wireless Ad Hoc Networks
The present document is essentially a summarized version of the dissertation that will be developed within the scope of an MSc degree in Communication Networks, in the area of security in wireless ad hoc network. Wireless ad hoc networking is a technology that allows fast, easy, and inexpensive network deployment. Unfortunately, these advantages also make the task of an attacker simpler, as it ...
متن کاملBroadcast Routing in Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks: A Particle Swarm optimization Approach
While routing in multi-hop packet radio networks (static Ad-hoc wireless networks), it is crucial to minimize power consumption since nodes are powered by batteries of limited capacity and it is expensive to recharge the device. This paper studies the problem of broadcast routing in radio networks. Given a network with an identified source node, any broadcast routing is considered as a directed...
متن کاملLEBRP - A Lightweight and Energy Balancing Routing Protocol for Energy-Constrained Wireless Ad Hoc Networks
A wireless ad hoc network typically refers to any set of wireless networks where all devices have equal status on a network and are free to associate with any other wireless ad hoc network devices in their range. As the nature of these networks, they commonly do not have external power supplies, and each node has a limited internal power source. In this paper, we put forward a new routing proto...
